News to Know
The Bad News
- One person in the United States dies of colorectal cancer (CRC) every 8.8 minutes...60,000 annually.
- Close to 160,000 new cases of CRC are diagnosed annually....one every 3.3 minutes.
- CRC is the 2nd most deadly form of cancer in the United States, claiming the lives of 60,000 men and women a year. To make things more tragic, the vast majority of these deaths could have easily been prevented.
The Good News
- In most cases, early detection saves lives. Almost all cases of CRC begin with the development of benign polyps which are now quite easy to detect and remove before they become cancerous. Greater than 90% of all cases of CRC are curable when detected early through screening.
The Better News
- New techniques for finding polyps in their early stages mean people who should be getting screened have simple options to choose from. Knowledge is power. Through innovation and education, more and more people are beginning to realize how preventable this deadly disease is. As awareness and our proactive attitudes continue to evolve, we will finally witness a dramatic reduction in the unfortunate and unnecessary statistics of CRC.
The Headline News
- You now have a choice and it's within your reach. If you are 50 years of age or older or 40+ with a family history of CRC, if you value yourself and your family, and you think being with them many more years might be worth a small inconvenience (the critical bowel preps needed), then please make the decision to get screened. Better still...encourage a loved one or friend to do it, too! A minor, perhaps slight embarrassment today, will pay huge dividends for you and your loved ones tomorrow.
